Dell is pushing software to its PCs today that will remove a certificate it recently installed them that introduced a security vulnerability

The security glitch was spotted on new laptops by several Dell users who notified the company.

Dell said the certificate was part of a support tool intended to make it faster and easier for our customers to service their system.

In a mea culpa, the company said we deeply regret that this has happened and are taking steps to address it.

There s nothing wrong with the certificate itself, Dell said.

The certificate is not malware or adware. Rather, it was intended to provide the system service tag to Dell online support allowing us to quickly identify the computer model, making it easier and faster to service our customers. This certificate is not being used to collect personal customer information. It s also important to note that the certificate will not reinstall itself once it is properly removed using the recommended Dell process.

Instructions in how to remove it are posted on Dell s website. An update will be pushed to Dell PC users starting today that will check for the certificate and remove it.
