Facebook notifications? Yes, there s an app for that.

The social media giant on Wednesday introduced an app that allows its users to keep up with news and other interests by following stations such as magazines, news sites and other media outlets. Users then receive notifications from these sources on their phone s locked screen.

Publishers that are posting content in the app include BuzzFeed, Vogue, CBS Sports, The New York Times, The Weather Channel, The Washington Post and more.

Taking on other social media sites such as Twitter, Facebook s efforts to make it easier for its 1.5 billion users to follow the news comes as more people turn to social media to keep up with what s happening with the world.

In May, the company started partnering with publishers to on a new tool called Instant Articles that allows media outlets to directly publish stories on the social network.

About 64 percent of U.S. adults use Facebook and half of those users get news there, according to the Pew Research Center.

Notify launched on Wednesday in the United States for iPhone users.
