That didn t take long.

Tesla owners got new autopilot software for their sedans this week. Many promptly took their hands off the wheel and shot video of their auto-piloted adventures.

Here s a guy sitting in the back seat of his Tesla, filming an empty driver s seat in a moving vehicle.

Here s a Model S trying vainly to make an exit, like a dog trying to turn back home during a walk in the rain.

Here s Elon Musk last year taking a Bloomberg reporter on a test drive. Note how he waves his hands.

Several drivers have also reported glitches with the new software on message boards and public forums.

Tesla tells drivers the system supports hands-free driving but is not a substitute for a human driver. We are advising people to keep their hands on the wheel just in case, Musk told reporters at the autopilot reveal last week. The software is very new.

Or, as your father said: keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road. Don t be that guy.

The techie dream of a hands-free Tesla commute remains elusive, even as others have a head start in that market.
