Video game console maker Nintendo posted a 63 percent gain in profit and raised its annual sales forecast after its Wii console outsold systems from Sony and Microsoft.

Third-quarter net income rose to $1.2 billion. Sales in the period ended Dec. 31 gained 50 percent to $5.8 billion. The figures, derived from nine-month results the Kyoto, Japan, company reported Thursday, beat analysts’ estimates.

Nintendo raised its target for Wii shipments, a sign it’s closing the gap with Sony, the world’s biggest game-system maker.

The company raised its annual Wii sales forecast 5.7 percent to 18.5 million consoles, and the outlook for Wii software sales by 19 percent to 115 million units.
