Mountain View police said Tuesday they are searching for a man who allegedly exposed himself to a young girl on two occasions slightly more than a year apart.

The first incident, which was never reported to police, took place in February 2011, said police spokeswoman Liz Wylie. A man in his 50s driving a red Jeep pulled up to the girl, who was 12 at the time, and allegedly exposed himself to her without leaving the driver’s seat.

On Monday at about 3:30 p.m., the same man driving the same vehicle pulled up to the girl as she was walking home from school on the 100 block of North Rengstorff Avenue and exposed himself to her in the same fashion, Wylie said.

This time, the girl reported the incident to her parents and school officials, who called police, Wylie said.

The man had a gray mustache and medium-length gray hair on both occasions, police said. He also wore the same outfit: a black baseball cap, sunglasses, a gray T-shirt and blue shorts. As of Tuesday afternoon, police were still working to produce a sketch of the suspect.

He did not attempt to lure the girl into his vehicle or approach her in either case, Wylie said.

Police believe the man may have exposed himself to other students or adult females in the past. Wylie said it is not uncommon for such crimes to go unreported. Anyone who believes they were victimized by this man is asked to call police immediately at 650-903-6395.

In light of the incidents, police encouraged parents and guardians to talk with their children about crime prevention and awareness. Children should never get into a stranger’s car or go anywhere with a stranger and should be encouraged to immediately report any strange or criminal behavior, Wylie said.
