NEW YORK – At Fashion Week, it’s all about the shoes.

Not just the ones sauntering down the runways, but the ones dangling off crossed legs in the front row. The ones shuffling to and from the Bryant Park tents where the fashion shows are held. The ones that catch our eye and hypnotize us before we even look at the outfits or the women wearing them.

So what if New York is a walking city or that there was a taxi strike? Fancy footwear never folds for comfort or convenience.

“Shoes possess magical properties; capable of making you feel splendid or sexy, elegant or sporty at a single stroke,” says Italian author and shoe fanatic Paola Jacobbi in her newly published book, “I Want Those Shoes!” ($18, 160 pp., Scribner).

Here, a look at some of the shoes that were worn with next spring’s collections and below, a sampling of the shoes on the feet of front-row invitees at the Tommy Hilfiger show.
