Seagate Technology, the world’s biggest maker of hard-disk drives, sued smaller rival STEC Monday, accusing it of infringing patents for data-storage devices. Seagate claims that STEC’s Zeus, Mach8 and IDE products infringe four patents, according to a complaint filed in federal court in San Francisco. Seagate, based in the Cayman Islands and operated from Scotts Valley, is seeking a court order to prevent use of its inventions, plus cash compensation. STEC, based in Santa Ana, makes flash-memory drives for EMC, the world’s largest maker of data-storage computers. STEC spokeswoman Elaine Marshall said the company is reviewing the allegations.
