PLEASANT HILL — Friends and family of a Pleasant Hill teen in a coma following a skateboarding accident Thursday are raising money for his medical care.
Ryan Carroll, 18, of Pleasant Hill, was skateboarding in Santa Barbara, where he attends school, when he fell and hit his head, according to Sandy Engdahl, a family friend. He suffered a skull fracture and swelling to the brain and is in a medically induced coma.
Carroll is a 2013 graduate of College Park High School who used his skateboard as a way to get around Santa Barbara, where he attends community college. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
His parents, Terri and Russell, are at his bedside as he struggles to recover from the accident.
“It’s a wait-and-see kind of situation,” said Engdahl.

Another Contra Costa County native, 20-year-old Kate Hopkins, of Martinez, died after falling off her longboard while visiting Yosemite on March 17, according to KTVU. Hopkins was a 2012 Alhambra High School grad and a student at the University of Tennessee.
