The Ohlone College newspaper, the Monitor, brought home nine awards from the Journalism Association of Community Colleges’ Statewide Convention in Burbank, including four first-place finishes and the coveted General Excellence Award.

Ohlone College journalism students competed against 43 community college newspapers around the state for general awards and also for on-the spot reporting competitions. More than 540 delegates attended and prizes were awarded for work in student publications in categories including news writing, photography and layout. Ohlone newspaper delegates received first-place awards in all three categories.

The convention was also an educational opportunity for journalism students to participate in workshops covering expansive topics of interest to budding journalists, from ways to improve their writing and photography, to classes on preserving online reputation and selling photography work.

In the Publication Contest, Monitor Photo Editor Tam Duong Jr. won first place for feature photo and sports photo, Editor-in-chief Louis LaVenture won sports writing, and Duong and LaVenture jointly won first place for inside page layout.

In addition, Ohlone received second place for sports game story and news photo, and third place for both front page layout and informational graphic.

Journalism Association of Community Colleges is a non-profit educational corporation dedicated to community college journalism in California. Students and faculty from around the state take part in two regional conferences and a statewide convention every year. This year’s convention was held at the Los Angeles Marriott Burbank Airport Hotel from April 3 to 5.
