Jennifer Lawrence has finally done something that doesn’t make the world smile and let out a collective happy sigh.
According to Vulture, the 23-year-old “X-Men” actress made a rape joke May 17 at the Vanity Fair Cannes Film Festival that, predictably, has some people upset.
Upon seeing “Gravity” director Alfonso Cuaron, Lawrence supposedly cried out, “I broke out my rape scream for you!” as she grabbed his shoulders and screamed, “Ahhhhh!!!” into his face.
Lawrence is being accused by some of trivializing rape.
“Lawrence is painted as the goofy girl next door that everyone wants to be best friends with, but would you really want to befriend someone that describes excitement as a ‘rape scream?'” Maitri Mehta, from Bustle, wrote. “It might seem like a joke to Lawrence, but rape is never an acceptable topic to joke about — especially for a star in a young adult franchise that so many young girls look up to.”
Crushable’s Alexis Rhiannon said Lawrence probably didn’t mean for anyone else to hear the remark, but that’s not an excuse. “By her blase use of the terminology, it seems likely that she’s been lucky enough never to be in a situation necessitating that type of scream, or else I hope she wouldn’t throw it around so casually,” she wrote. “I’m not suggesting that Jennifer intended to be flippant about rape or assault, just that she was.”
Lawrence, of course, usually charms us with her off-the-cuff goofiness, with her self-effacing remarks about eating and lack of exercise. Of course, she also says things that do upset a few, like in 2012 when she told Ellen DeGeneres her female cat is so masculine, she calls it “Chaz Bono.” Other people got upset when Lawrence told Rolling Stone she was “so dykey.”
Sigh.
At the party, Lawrence was also allegedly also overheard saying “I want to meet Bieber!” who was also there. So, obviously, she’d been drinking. A lot.
