A GoFundMe account established for the family of Bryce Turner, a Cal defensive back who died Jan. 5, has raised more than one-third of the $30,000 goal in two days.

Turner, 20, collapsed after a workout. His cause of death is unclear. His funeral service, according to the Long Beach Post, will be Saturday at Faithful Central Baptist Church in Inglewood.

The note from the family on the GoFundMe page reads:

“We are humbled by the outpouring of love in the untimely demise of Bryce. Many have inquired how they can assist and we are truly grateful.

Whatever your heart leads you to give  is much appreciated.

Again we want to thank you for the love, prayers and support.

The family of Bryce Turner”

Long Beach Community College football coach Brett Peabody told the Post that Turner was the third LBCC player or alumnus to have died in a 16-month span.

“Bryce was an amazing young man with all his priorities in the right order,” Peabody told the Post. “He was fun to be around and a good leader for us even as a freshman.”

Turner accepted an invitation to walk on at Cal after his freshman season at LBCC.

“He said, ‘Coach, my dream is to go to Cal,’ and I patted him on the back and wished him well,” Peabody said. “He was a kid everyone knew would be successful, with so much life in front of him and a beautiful family. It’s hard to understand.”
