The CHP said about 7:35 a.m. Tuesday a CHP motorcycle officer attempted to stop the motorcyclist, who was traveling at a high rate of speed west of Treasure Island. The motorcycle also did not have license plates displayed as required by law, the CHP said.

The motorcyclist crashed  just east of Fremont Street on the San Francisco side of the bridge, the CHP said. He died later from his injuries.

A Sig Alert that closed at least two lanes of the bridge so that the CHP could investigate the crash was issued about 7:42 a.m., causing long delays for commuters. It was not known when the alert would be lifted or when the lanes would reopen.

The fatality is being investigated by the  CHP-Golden Gate Division Multi-disciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT).
