Two-time Pro Bowl running back Frank Gore plans to hold out when 49ers open training camp, according to ESPN.
Gore spent the off-season working out in Miami, where he rehabilitated a broken hip sustained last November. His agent, Drew Rosenhaus, declared him fit on May 27 with a Twitter post that said “he is 100% healthy and fully recovered from his hip injury. He’s never looked better.”
Quarterback Alex Smith said several times this summer that he’d heard similar updates from Gore during their phone conversations.
Gore is due to make $2.9 million in salary with a $2 million roster bonus this season. His 2011 cap number is $7.1 million.
With 6,414 rushing yards, Gore ranks behind only Joe Perry (7,344) and Roger Craig (7,064) on the 49ers’ all-time list. Gore has the most 100-yard games in franchise history (24) and the most 150-yard performances (five).
In other news, CSN Bay Area reported that the 49ers will release David Carr on Thursday. Carr was scheduled to take up $2.375 million in cap room in 2012.
