The Eden Township Healthcare District board of directors will discuss the possible acquisition of Hayward’s St. Rose Hospital at its regular meeting Wednesday night.
The meeting is at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the board room at the Hayward Recreation & Park District main office, 1099 E. St.
District and hospital officials have been discussing a merger for several months now. Last week at a packed hearing at the San Leandro Senior Center, board members and officials from St. Rose spoke positively about a merger. Sherman Balch, finance director at St. Rose, said the hospital spends more than it receives. “We just need to find an additional source of funding,” Balch told the crowd.
St. Rose is a privately run nonprofit hospital. If it were to become a district hospital, it would become eligible for such government subsidies as federal matching funds for intergovernmental transfers, and access to parcel tax revenues, with the approval of voters.
But before any merger can occur, the health care district must resolve its legal battle with Sutter Health over ownership of San Leandro Hospital, district CEO Dev Mahadevan said last week. The district and Sutter have been in a three legal fight over that hospital. In December, California’s First Appellate Court of Appeal came down in favor of Sutter. The district has since appealed the decision.
