Authorities responding to a burglary alarm early this morning at a high school in San Francisco’s Richmond District found smoldering paper on the school’s rooftop, a fire department spokeswoman said.

“Somebody set a ream of paper on fire on the rooftop … but the rain squelched it,” fire Lt. Mindy Talmadge said. A ream is 500 pages, she said.

The fire at George Washington High School, located at 600 32nd Ave., was reported at 12:36 a.m.

“They apparently had squeezed through some chained doors at the school,” setting off the school’s burglary alarm, she said. The suspect or suspects then went into the school and onto the roof.

Police who responded smelled smoke and found the burned paper on the roof, Talmadge said. The fire was already just about out when they arrived, she said.

A canine unit was unable to locate any intruders, Talmadge said.
