Cisco Systems, Intel and Juniper Networks were among 60 tech companies that sent a letter Wednesday to Congress and the Federal Communications Commission, opposing a plan by President Obama to regulate high-speed Internet service as a public utility.

Obama s proposal is intended to prevent Internet providers from slowing service to certain websites and charging certain customers higher prices for faster Internet speed.

But in their letter, the companies insisted  the move is unnecessary to ensure an open Internet and would hurt tech innovation.

One study estimates that capital investment by certain broadband providers could be between $28.1 and $45.4 billion lower than expected over the next five years, if the FCC approves the utility reclassification, the letter said.
