Quoted: on perks at Pinterest, other tech companies

“We’re all lucky as hell to live here and be in this crazy zeitgeist of a movement that’s rich with money.” — Evan Sharp, Pinterest co-founder, on why — besides the competition for talent — his company chooses to shower its employees with perks such as free food, muay thai classes, wine tastings and more. The Wall Street Journal finds that it’s a dirty job, but somebody’s got to do it: Tech companies have employees whose sole duty is to keep other employees happy with perks. San Francisco-based Pinterest’s head of workplace is Jen Nguyen, who has coordinated things such as a Jell-O shot-making “studio night.” But the WSJ reports that sometimes tech employees’ requests get a little out there; they include a zip line from the office to a nearby bar, and a Slip ‘N Slide to use during the workday.
