Quoted: Apple and Samsung cut losses on lawsuits

“They now see little need to wage a war around the world, which will only fatten the bills of lawyers.”

— Young Park, a Hyundai Securities technology analyst in Hong Kong, explaining to Reuters why Apple and Samsung agreed Tuesday to drop all ongoing patent litigation against each other in every country except the U.S. The deal can be seen as a detente of some sort, as costly legal battles have failed to result in sweeping bans on either’s technology. The tech giants see their “mixed worldwide results as not worth the effort.” Villanova law professor Michael Risch told Bloomberg News. Lawsuits had been pending in Australia, Japan, South Korea, Germany, the Netherlands, the UK, France, Spain and Italy. Apple has won two verdicts in San Jose federal court: a $119 million judgment in May, and a $930 million judgment in 2012.
