Air quality officials warn that unhealthy and smoky conditions will continue this weekend throughout much of the Bay Area as northern winds continue to carry in smoke from Wine Country fires, adding to the smoke that’s already hovering over the area.

However, inland East Bay cities — such as Livermore and Concord — saw improved air quality Saturday, as they are east of the main smoke plumes, the air district said. The improved conditions there are expected to continue Sunday and Monday as winds move smoke away from that area.

Winds will largely carry new smoke across the Northern and Central Bay Area, but trapped smoke will continue to affect the Peninsula and the South Bay, the Bay Area Air Quality District said in an advisory Saturday morning. Air quality index levels are expected to remain unhealthy, particularly for people sensitive to poor air conditions.

Winds are expected to lighten and gradually shift from northeast to east Sunday and Monday, which means new smoke will largely hover north of San Francisco. Meanwhile, residual smoke will still be an issue in the South Bay, according to the air quality district.

Many schools, workplaces and public facilities across the Bay Area closed this past week because of the overwhelming smoke severely affecting most of the region.
