Microsoft said Wednesday that its Windows 10 operating system will launch this summer as a free upgrade in 190 countries and 111 languages.

The announcement was made at the Windows Hardware Engineering Community conference in Shenzhen China, a nod to the importance of China-based PC maker Lenovo to the Redmond, Wash. company’s future.

“China is a global epicenter for innovation and the home of hundreds of millions of Windows PCs today,” said Terry Meyerson, Microsoft’s vice president for Windows. Lenovo Group vice president Fuyao Tong joined Meyerson on stage.

Tong said Lenovo is “joining the Windows Phone ecosystem with our first Windows Phone mid-year 2015.”

The new version of the venerable Windows system “delivers new capabilities,” the company said in a press release.

The new version will permit biometric unlocking of devices, via face, iris or fingerprint. The operating system will be a free upgrade to anyone with Windows 7, Windows 8.1 or Windows Phone 8.1 in the first year, the software giant said.
