GEORGETOWN, Del. — After more than two decades on the bench, the head of Delaware’s Court of Chancery is retiring this week to take a job with Palo Alto law firm Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati.

William Chandler III, 60, has spent 14 years leading the court, which oversees corporate law in a state that is the legal home to more than half of all publicly traded U.S. companies, including about two-thirds of the Fortune 500.

At Wilson Sonsini, Chandler will focus on advising corporate clients and working behind the scenes on litigation strategy.

As chancellor, Chandler presided over many high-profile cases involving companies such as Walt Disney, Yahoo (YHOO), Microsoft, eBay (EBAY) and Hewlett-Packard (HPQ), often peppering his opinions with literary and pop-culture references ranging from Shakespeare to rapper 50 Cent.
