What the election taught us about the future of news(0)

At the Web 2.0 Summit last week, the most timely panel may have been “The Web and Politics.” Moderated by John Heilemann of New York Magazine, the panel discussion included Arianna Huffington of the Huffington Post; Gavin Newsom, mayor of San Francisco; and Joe Trippi, former campaign manager for Howard Dean and John Edwards.

The discussion covered the role that social networks and the Web played in the victory by Barack Obama and whether that’s permanently changed how elections will be run. The group also discussed how this election signaled a change in the way the press covers campaigns, how voters get their information, and what that means going forward. Read the rest of this entry »

Pink Slip 2.0(1)

I recently had a chance to meet and talk with Loic Le Meur, the entrepreneur behind Seesmic. So I was sorry to hear that he had to lay off seven of his employees on Friday.

But in true Web 2.0 style, Le Meur announced the news publicly on his blog. And he even used his own video service to discuss the news:

The end of Web 1.0 and the challenge ahead for Google(0)

The Yahoo showdown with Carl Icahn is only two weeks away. Today, Yahoo got some great news that Legg Mason, which owns 4 percent of the company, will back Yahoo over Icahn. I may yet have to eat crow over my prediction that Icahn would win a shareholder vote. “We would prefer that the company and Mr. Icahn reach a mutual agreement on the composition of the Board and end this disruptive proxy contest.”

But no matter what happens over these next couple of weeks, I’ve come to believe that the Yahoo ordeal is part of a larger story playing out across Silicon Valley. In 2008, we’re seeing the end of Web 1.0 as several first-generation Web companies are either collapsing, or beginning to wheeze heavily. Read the rest of this entry »

Porn site sponsorship of girl geek dinner causes a stir(5)

On June 26, a group of local women is holding the second Bay Area Girl Geek Dinner. The dinner is part of larger series of international gatherings that aim to provide a place for women to gather to network and discuss tech subjects. The latest event will include a panel of women, most of whom work at Facebook, one of the event’s sponsors.

The problem, for some women, is the event’s other sponsor: Zivity.

Never heard of Zivity? That may be because it’s still in beta. Or it may be because it’s a porn site. Actually, it’s a kind of Web 2.0 porn site that aims to mashup high-class porn, user-generated content, and social networking.

Check out this stream of Twitter comments that were being made about Zivity’s role in the dinner on Tuesday.

So what is Zivity? Read the rest of this entry »
