The 88-year-old Belmont man who was violently attacked in a home invasion robbery earlier this month has died, police said.

The San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office filed homicide, burglary, and robbery charges against Tyler Hutchinson, a 21-year-old transient, for the June 2 attack.

Belmont police said Hutchinson entered the elderly man’s home on the 2500 block of Hallmark Drive through a bedroom window, assaulted him, ransacked his home and stole his 2004 Jaguar X-Type sedan from his garage.

The victim has since been in critical condition with head and face injuries and passed away at Stanford Medical Center on Wednesday, police said.

Hutchinson is currently in custody on related charges in Yolo County, according to police. Police said they were unsure when he would be transferred to San Mateo County.

Detectives said they linked Hutchinson to the case through physical evidence. They found his fingerprints inside the stolen Jaguar when police recovered it on Carlmont Drive on June 5, they said.

“The senseless violence brought against this innocent 88-year-old man constitutes one of the most disturbing things I’ve seen in my law enforcement career,” Chief Don Mattei said. “We will continue to work closely with the DA’s office to ensure that Hutchinson will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

The San Mateo County Coroner’s Office said late Wednesday they would release the victim’s identity early today.

The man lived with his wife, who was not home at the time, police said.

“The thoughts and prayers of this community are still with the victim’s family,” Mattei said. “Though this is no time for celebration, our investigators should be commended for their tireless work on this case.”
