VALLEJO — A mother was killed and five others were injured after a vehicle went off the road and onto the sidewalk Friday afternoon, police said.

Vallejo police officers responded to a reported injury collision around 3:23 p.m. Friday in the 3600 block of Sonoma Boulevard, according to a Vallejo Police Department news release.

A 65-year-old Suisun City resident driving a silver 2012 Nissan Versa was traveling northbound on Sonoma Boulevard when he drove it up on the east sidewalk, police said. The driver continued north, colliding with a shopping cart and hitting a 47-year-old Vallejo resident, who was waiting at a bus stop.

The Nissan continued north, where it struck a wooden utility pole, then hit a family of five walking northbound. The victims were dragged by the car as it drove back to the roadway, coming to rest in the left lane.

Two members of the family were pinned under the car and the other three were carried and thrown clear of the Nissan, police said.

A tow truck driver traveling southbound on Sonoma Boulevard saw the vehicle at rest and used the truck’s towing equipment to lift the car off the victims trapped under the Nissan.

A 49-year-old Vallejo resident died at the scene, police said. Her 4-year-old daughter was also injured.

A 25-year-old Vallejo resident was extricated and transported to Northbay Hospital, where she was in stable condition. Her 4-year-old son was also injured.

The two children were transported by ground ambulance to UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital in Oakland, according to the Vallejo Times-Herald.

A victim was transported by air ambulance and was listed in critical condition Friday night, police said.

The remaining victim, a Vallejo resident, was transported to the hospital.

Clothes and various items were strewn about Sonoma Boulevard, along with pieces of the Versa, which had its front end extensively damaged.

The driver of the Nissan was on the scene and was treated for unknown injuries, according to the Times-Herald.

The driver was released from the hospital and was no longer being detained by police, according to the release.

Investigators were working to determine if alcohol or drugs were a factor in this collision or if the driver had a medical condition that contributed to the crash.

Police withheld the identities of the victims and the driver.

The collision is under investigation and anyone with information is encouraged to call Vallejo police Officer Jeff Tai at 707-648-4011.
