SUPPORT PROGRAMS FOR VETERANS

California is already considered a national role model in providing veterans with educational support. Last year, the heads of the University of California, California State University and community colleges, along with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, launched a new “Troops to College” program to better serve veterans. Northern California colleges are ramping up with new services:

UC-Berkeley will offer a special course for veterans in the fall. The one-unit class, called “Veterans in Higher Education,” will ease the transition from combat to college.

Extra staff at San Jose State University act as a liaison between the school’s Office of the Registrar and the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Foothill College offers “Project Veterans,” a one-stop information resource and guide to student services for veterans seeking vocational training, a college degree or an apprenticeship program.

UC-Santa Cruz features an innovative peer-mentor program run by other veterans.
