Pacifica Art Connection proudly presents the artwork of one of Pacifica’s most revered and multi-talented artists. This retrospective exhibit, which runs through March 1, 2010, boasts artworks in watercolor and acrylic.

Mrs. Ewald is a past recipient of the City of Pacifica Lifetime Achievement Award in the Arts. In addition to her paintings and visual artworks, Roberta is a poet, composer, actress and author, and has been a participant in, and an able leader of, many art and theater events in Pacifica as far back as 1959. Her outstanding creative talents are remarkable, and truly a tribute to our city’s cultural scene.

This travelogue in art contains a broad spectrum of Roberta’s personal recollections of the time in cities such as Istanbul Turkey, Calcutta India, Taiwan, Munich Germany, Guadalajara Mexico and her ancestral home of Granhult Sweden.

As owners of a travel agency, travel was a way of life for Roberta and her husband Henry, and they were well known among travel proponents around the world. When traveling abroad they were given hotel rooms with the finest views, and many of the watercolor paintings in this retrospective were painted from the windows and balconies of these hotels.

While in Calcutta, because of her compassion for the poverty and suffering of the locals, she chose not to take a walk through the streets with her husband, but rather to stay on the balcony of their room and paint. While returning from his walk, her husband noticed a large group of people looking up at the hotel”…only to realize that they were watching Roberta on the balcony painting; delightfully watching her watching them! She has many interesting stories to share with you about her travels.

You will enjoy Roberta’s robustly colorful and intuitive treatment in her acrylic rendering of the Church in Granhult, Sweden where her grandparents are buried, as well as the “Birch Forest” nearby. Her free and impressionistic interpretations are so evident in the expressive watercolor paintings from around the world. If you are a traveler or a ‘would be’ traveler you are sure to enjoy this exhibit.

In the sculpture bay you will see Roberta’s personal collection of carved African animals beautifully crafted by artists from Kenya.

You are cordially invited to attend the reception on Sunday afternoon, Jan. 24 from 2 to 4 p.m., where as a bonus you will enjoy the delightful keyboard artistry of her son, Grant Ewald, from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Grant is well known in Pacifica where he regularly performs at Nick’s, as well as being known more widely in San Francisco venues and on cruise ships.

Quarry Cove Gallery is located at 255 Rockaway Beach Ave., right next to the Visitor Center.
