Location tracking software on a stolen iPad led San Leandro police officers directly to two burglars who broke into a home there earlier this week, authorities said.

Police were called to the 1200 block of Dorothy Avenue on Wednesday afternoon for a report of a burglary in which jewelry and electronics were stolen, the San Leandro Police Department said. Authorities believe the burglars entered the home through an unlocked side door.

An iPad was among the stolen items, according to police, and by signing in with her Apple account, the burglary victim was able to see that the tablet at that point was at a shopping center a few miles away.

Police said they kept tracking the tablet’s location at the shopping center and zeroed in on a car with two passengers, a man and a woman.

When they stopped the car, authorities said, they could see the stolen iPad at the feet of the woman, who was also wearing some of the jewelry that had been taken in the burglary.

Police arrested two Petaluma residents, William Kennedy, 40, and Wanda Scott, 42, on tentative charges of possession of stolen property and suspicion of burglary.
