There may be no such thing as a free lunch, but every summer, there’s free music–and free ice cream to go with it in some cases–when Symphony Silicon Valley presents the Target Summer Pops concert series.

Symphony Silicon Valley is taking it outside with this series of five concerts held over two weekends.

The Summer Pops is an outdoor music festival taking place July 28 through Aug. 5 on the mall at San Jose State University, Fourth and W. San Carlos streets, San Jose.

The symphony presents five picnic-ready performances that feature many a favorite tune. The series gets under way with “A Little Classical Night Music,” July 28, 7 p.m., a program of light classics, from Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake to the piece for which the concert is named, Mozart’s A Little Night Music.

“Fiddles and Fables” on July 29, 5:30 p.m. highlights familiar tunes that range from the William Tell Overture to music from The Empire Strikes Back. Free ice cream will accompany this concert.

The following weekend features, on Aug. 3, 7 p.m., clarinetist, saxophonist and composer–and nine-time Grammy Award winner–Paquito D’Rivera and his quintet playing tango-infused Latin jazz.

Also part of the Pops: on Aug. 4, 7 p.m., “The Great American Songbook: Rogers & Hart,” a concert of music by songwriting team Rogers & Hart, as well as Harold Arlen, with selections such as “Blue Moon,” “My Funny Valentine” and “That Old Black Magic,” sung by Broadway diva Christine Andreas. The series concludes Aug. 5, 5:30 p.m. with “Strike Up the Band,” a program of music by Copland and Shaw, plus an armed forces salute. This final concert also includes free ice cream.

All concerts are free. For more information, call 408.286.2600 or visit www.symphonysiliconvalley.org.
