With a month to go before the Rio Olympics, the host city remains in troubled waters. The water itself is also still in trouble.

The message from Rio de Janeiro police, according to reports, is that they will not be able to protect visitors because they are not being sufficiently financially supported.

“Police and firefighters don’t get paid, whoever comes to Rio de Janeiro will not be safe,” read a sign outside the Rio airport.

And then there was news Tuesday that an antibiotic-resistant super bacteria is present in nearby Guanabara Bay.

“These bacteria should not be present in these waters,” Renata Picao, a professor at Rio’s federal university whose study found the super bug, told Scientific American. “I wouldn’t say to change the venues because we don’t know the risks yet. We are making this alert because, if athletes get infected there is a chance this bacteria is multi-resistant and the physicians should know about this.”
