“Can you tell me how to get, how to get to Sesame Street?”

It’s a question that’s been asked for five decades through the catchy theme song of the beloved children’s show — and now there’s an actual answer.

First get yourself to Manhattan, as we had long suspected, then make your way down to West 63rd Street. On Wednesday, New York City officially designated it Sesame Street to honor the 50th anniversary of the show.

West 63rd was chosen because it is home to the headquarters of Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit organization that produces “Sesame Street” and other children’s programming.

But it wasn’t necessarily an easy choice, and other locations were considered, according to the Guardian. The borough of Queens would have made sense since “Sesame Street” is shot in the Astoria area.

Other possibilities included the neighborhoods of Harlem and Alphabet City, since both closely resemble Sesame Street in appearance and demographic makeup.

But in the end Sesame Workshop officials decided they wanted the street close to home, and it only made sense that they would be able to walk out of their offices’ front door and walk onto Sesame Street.

A public event was scheduled Wednesday at the corner of 63rd and Broadway to commemorate the redesignation of the street. Among those expected to attend were such luminaries as Big Bird, Elmo, Cookie Monster and cast members from throughout the show’s 50-year existence.

Still need directions to Sesame Street? No need to consult Google Maps; the Guardian broke it down: “Take the 1 uptown to 66th/Lincoln Center, then walk three blocks down to 63rd and take a left on Broadway. If you hit Central Park, you’ve gone too far.”

Come and play. Everything’s A-OK!
