First series (field goal): Garoppolo drove the 49ers into the red zone before Robbie Gould’s 33-yard field goal put them ahead 3-0. Garoppolo’s first pass sailed about 10 yards past Louis Murphy, but three consecutive completions followed, starting with a 15-yarder to Marquise Goodwin on third-and-10. Garoppolo’s stats: 4-of-7, 43 yards.

Second series (interception): The 49ers second possession ended with an odd interception: Garoppolo appeared to complete a third-down conversion pass over the middle to Louis Murphy, but Bears cornerback Kyle Fuller stripped the ball from Murphy for an interception that was confirmed by a replay ruling. It was the first interception in 104 career passes by Garoppolo. Garoppolo’s stats: 0-1, interception.

Third series (field goal): A 28-yard field goal got set up a drive that opened with Trubisky completions of 20, 17 and 22 yards to Marquise Goodwin, Trent Taylor and Garrett Celek. Score: Bears 7, 49ers 6. Time: 11:57 until halftime. Garoppolo’s stats: 4-of-5, 63 yards.

Fourth series (punt): Two illegal blocks and an 11-yard sack by Lamarr Houston kept the 49ers pinned inside their 20. That led to their first punt of the game, which Tarik Cohen returned 61 yards for a touchdown and 14-6 lead 5:49 before halftime. Garoppolo’s stats: 3-of-4, 22 yards.

Fifth series (field goal): A nice balance of passes and runs sent the 49ers into the red zone, highlighted by Garoppolo’s play-action pass to Goodwin over the middle for an 18-yard gain to the Bears 31. That drive remained alive when he found Trent Taylor for a 10-yard conversion on third-and-5. But back-to-back false-start penalties stalled them out, and Gould came in for a 35-yard field goal 24 seconds until halftime. Garoppolo’s stats: 4-of-5, 44 yards.

Sixth series (field goal): With a blitzing linebacker coming untouched at him, Garoppolo quickly slung a sidearm pass that hit Trent Taylor in stride for a 15-yard completion on third-and-8 to the Bears 20. Garoppolo stats: 4-of-5, 49 yards. Score: Bears 14, 49ers 12. Time: 1:57 left in third quarter.

Seventh series (punt): A third-down completion by Trent Taylor got the 49ers into Bears territory, and Goodwin’s 8-yard catch put the 49ers in field-goal range. But an illegal-block penalty on Garrett Celek pushed them back, and when Garoppolo sailed a third-down pass over Louis Murphy, the 49ers punted with 10:56 left. Garoppolo’s stats: 2-of-3, 8 yards.

Eight series (field goal): A 14-play, 86-yard winning drive made for a heck of a finish to Garoppolo’s first 49ers start. By opening with a 13-yard completion to Goodwin to the 21-yard line, the 49ers got breathing room to operate. Carlos Hyde came through with an 18-yard run on third-and-1, but three snaps later came a bigger third-down conversion, with Trent Taylor producing a 33-yard reception to the Bears’ 18-yard line on third-and-9 with 2 minutes remaining. Garoppolo’s stats: 5-of-6, 54 yards.
