Sandy Alderson said Monday he doesn’t recall any conversation instigated by manager Tony La Russa when the two were with the Oakland A’s about suspicions of performance enhancing drug usage, the New York Daily News reported.
Alderson, now the New York Mets general manager, served in that role with the A’s from 1983-1997. He was asked to respond to La Russa told the Daily News this weekend that he brought “suspicions” of possible steroid use by A’s players to Alderson and team ownership, but was met with indifference. La Russa, who was inducted Sunday into the Baseball Hall of Fame, managed the A’s from 1986-95.
“I spent a lot of time thinking about those kinds of circumstances over the years, particularly eight or nine years ago, and I have absolutely no recollection whatsoever of any such conversation,” Alderson said before the Mets’ game with the Phillies.
Alderson was asked if his had his own suspicions of players’ PED use.
“If you go back and look at what I have said on the record, yes, I had my suspicions,” Alderson said. “I’m just here to respond to what Tony had to say and let’s leave it at that.”
