MENLO PARK — The suspect in last week’s residential robbery and sexual assault on Ringwood Avenue was booked into San Mateo County Jail on Friday when he was released from Stanford Medical Center, where he was treated for injuries related to the crime.
Lamar Dekari Stevens, 36, of San Jose, had been on parole after being released from prison for a robbery conviction, Menlo Park police said.
Stevens was released by Stanford Medical Center on Friday about 8:40 p.m. Stevens, who was taken into custody on a warrant, is now being held on $8 million bail.
Police said the warrant listed three counts of assault to commit sexual crimes during a residential burglary, lewd acts by force, attempted sodomy by force, sodomy by force, sexual battery by force, first-degree burglary, first-degree robbery and grand theft.
Menlo Park police on Aug. 11 took a report from a 65-year-old man, who said that another man had broken into his home in the 1000 block of Ringwood Ave. at 4:50 a.m. The victim told police that the intruder had held him at knifepoint and then sexually assaulted and robbed him.
The victim escaped and called police from a neighbor’s house, police said.
Police said officers arrived within minutes of the call and located Stevens on the Ringwood pedestrian overcrossing at 4:55 a.m. Officers released a police canine to apprehend him.
In an attempt to escape, Stevens jumped over the overcrossing fence to Van Buren Road, 30 feet below. He suffered serious injuries and was taken into custody, police said. He was then transported to Stanford Medical Center under police guard.
The investigation into the case was completed by the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office while Stevens was recovering from injuries, police said.
