GDC 2016 is all about VR. With the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift around the corner, Sony is the last major player to enter the fray. On Tuesday, the company put its cards on the table with PlayStation VR.

President of Sony Computer Entertainment Andrew House announced that PlayStation VR will launch this October and will be priced for $399. That s huge news for those anticipating that virtual reality will be the next big thing.

Sony s pricing undercuts the Oculus Rift, which costs $599.99, and the HTC Vive, which has a $799 price tag. Although it s cheaper, PlayStation VR won t have visuals as gorgeous as either of those systems nor will it have the same type of functionality.

But the fact that the PlayStation 4 install base is huge (about 36 million units sold at this point) and it promises to be easy to setup for lay people. It could be the breakthrough device to make virtual reality mainstream.

Add along the promise of a Star Wars: Battlefront game in the future. PlayStation VR could have its killer app just in time for the end of the year.
