Pharrell Williams has apologized for posing on a special-edition cover of Elle U.K. dressed in a Native American headdress.
Why do celebrities do offensive and/or terribly un-politically correct things when they know they’re going to have to backtrack?
What’s that … no bad publicity? Hmm … never heard that one before. But maybe it makes sense.
The “Happy” singer released a statement Wednesday, shortly after the photo started going viral with the hashtag #notHappy.
“I respect and honor every kind of race, background and culture,” he said in a statement to Buzzfeed. “I am genuinely sorry.”
He’s genuinely sorry — that everybody is ticked off.
According to India Country Today Media Network, the original post on Elle’s website read, “We persuaded ELLE Style Award winner Pharrell to trade his Vivienne Westwood Mountie hat for a Native American feather headdress in his best ever shoot.”
That’s now updated to read, “Continuing our tradition of featuring cult male icons on collector’s edition covers we persuaded ELLE Style Award winner Pharrell to collaborate with us on his best ever shoot.”
