Lawrence Lessig, the Harvard law professor and Internet-policy activist who was running for president with campaign finance reform as his focus, has halted his campaign for the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination.
In a YouTube video titled The Democrats have changed the rules, Lessig said the Democrats have refused to give him a seat at the table, and just changed a rule that would ve given him a spot in the second Democratic candidate debate. He said he can no longer subject his family and supporters to working on a losing effort.
[I] must now turn to the question of how best to continue to press for this reform now, Lessig said.
Lessig, whose high-profile friends and supporters include Wikipedia s Jimmy Wales, LinkedIn s Reid Hoffman and others, had crowdfunded his campaign. As Michelle Quinn wrote in August, Lessig had said he would resign if elected president and after campaign-finance and other reforms were implemented. Last month, he changed his mind and promised to stay on as president if elected.
