The Humane Society Silicon Valley is hosting its Summer Music & Wine Festival on Aug. 1 from 1 to 6 p.m. at its new location in Milpitas.

The one-day event is free and family- and pet-oriented, so attendees are invited to bring their children and dogs on leash.

A full day of activities is planned, with a chance to meet Abbie, the surfing dog in the film Marmaduke from 1 to 3 p.m., and free arts and crafts for children in the education center from 1 to 5 p.m.

Dog agility and flyball demonstrations will take place from 1:30 to 2 p.m. and again from 4:30 to 5 p.m.

The Joe Sharino Band will play rock ‘n’ roll from 2 to 4 p.m.

For those interested in adopting a pet, the adoption galleria will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. with dogs, cats and rabbits available. All adoptable animals have been spayed or neutered, vaccinated, micro-chipped and medically evaluated and temperament-tested.

While the event is free, adults can become a “HSSV Patron for the Day” for $20, which entitles them to sample beers, wines and finger foods and receive special discounts. Participating vendors are Big Dog Vineyards, Canine Wines, Jason-Stephens Winery, Joseph George Fine Wines, Mutt Lynch Winery, Tied House Brewery and Varner Wines.

The festival is presented by PETCO and the PETCO Foundation, with Abbie the Surf Dog’s appearance sponsored by Heavenly Greens and the Doubletree Hotel, San Jose.
