A Los Angeles man who was an H&R Block manager admitted Monday he used customer information to generate fraudulent tax returns and funnel thousands of dollars in refunds to himself.

Damon C. Dubose, 39, will be sentenced in July.

He pleaded guilty in federal court in Los Angeles to wire fraud and filing false claims, IRS spokeswoman Linda Lowery said.

While working at an H&R Block storefront in Van Nuys, Dubose used records of people who’d come for help with tax preparation to create at least 12 false returns, Lowery said.

The returns led to tax refunds of more than $48,000.

Dubose had the money deposited in an account linked to a prepaid debit card H&R Block offers called an “Emerald Card.” He then used the card to withdraw cash at ATMs, Lowery said.

She said Dubose could face 25 years in prison and a $500,000 fine.
