Helping the homeless can seem overwhelming when individuals don’t know specifically what they can do.

Now the Housing 1,000 group is offering individuals a chance to help directly by volunteering to participate in their upcoming Housing 1,000 Registry Week.

Specifically, they are seeking approximately 500 community members to volunteer their time June 27-29 to go out before dawn to survey and register homeless individuals.

Volunteer surveyors will work in teams and they will use a 33-question survey focused on homelessness and health needs. The responses will help assess a person’s vulnerability or risk of death if they remain homeless and allow the community to prioritize those most in need.

Surveyors, who must be 18 or older, will be asked to work from 4:15 to 9 a.m. during the three days and to attend a training session the week before. They will be assigned to specific areas to conduct surveys in.

About 400 surveyors are needed, with an additional 30 to 90 volunteers to do data entry on the same day it is collected.

Data entry volunteers must have basic computer skills, ability to enter data into a web-based form, dependability and the ability to maintain confidentiality. Another 20 to 60 volunteers are needed to help with site set up and cleanup at the volunteer headquarters and other sites. They will help with check-in, distribution of materials, food/supplies and clean up.
