Notable sports moments: Even in 1986, beating Mitty in girls basketball was a big deal, especially because the Monarchs were 25-0 and had a 48-game winning streak against Central Coast Section teams when they played Homestead for the CCS Division I title. But Homestead center Julie Szukalski scored 29 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead the Mustangs to a 49-43 victory. It was the first of four CCS titles in the sport for Homestead (27-3 that season), which also would go on to win as many in boys cross-country and girls swimming. In swimming, future world champion Linda Jezek set CCS records in all four of her individual events while leading the Mustangs to titles in 1976 and ’77.

Famous alumni: There have been several well-known sports figures to go through Homestead, but they are only a sideshow compared to the Big Two: Apple computer founders Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak. But for kicks, there’s Scott Erickson, the 6-foot-4 right-hander who won 142 games and threw a no-hitter during a 15-year big league career; Sean Dawkins, the former Cal receiver and nine-year NFL veteran; former U.S. World Cup men’s soccer coach Steve Sampson and Santa Clara’s NCAA women’s championship-winning soccer coach Jerry Smith.

Did you know? Homestead helped facilitate the emergence of the computer age with electronics classes such as John McCollum’s. The teacher created a hands-on classroom that encouraged students such as Wozniak to design, build and repair devices of their own creation.
