HOLLISTER — A 3.9-magnitude earthquake that struck about 7 miles southwest of Hollister at 8:52 p.m. Thursday was felt throughout the Bay Area, according to the United States Geological Survey.

It was initially reported as a 4.1-magnitude but quickly downgraded. However, respondents to the USGS website stated it was widely felt north through Silicon Valley and into San Francisco.

Gilroy police received no reports of injuries or damages, although they did field some calls from concerned residents, according to dispatchers.
