Eighth-grader Avi Goel of Merryhill School in Milpitas placed third in the California National Geographic State Bee, held in Fresno last month.

Ahilan Eraniyan, a sixth-grader at Diablo Vista Middle School in Danville, finished first and will continue to national competition in Washington, D.C., from May 14 to 17. Seventh-grader Venkat Ranjan of Windemere Ranch Middle School in San Ramon finished second.

The annual competition, for students in grades 4 through 8, tests knowledge about language, religion, culture, people, wildlife and other areas related to world geography.
