A small flare-up at the Chevron refinery in Richmond on Tuesday evening was nothing to be alarmed about, a company spokesman said.

Brent Tippen, a Chevron spokesperson, confirmed that flaring had occurred at the refinery earlier in the evening, but that it was conducted as a safety precaution.

Tippen added that no shelter-in-place order resulted from the small flare-up, and that the refinery is operating normally.

The Richmond refinery was the site of a major fire in August, when leaking fumes from a pipe carrying hot diesel fuel ignited, sending thick black smoke skyward and prompting thousands of people to report to hospitals with a variety of health complaints.
