The European Commission may bring a formal antitrust case against chip designer Rambus. Los Altos-based Rambus said it received the statement of objections, which is a preliminary view that Rambus may have broken European Union competition law. The company said it will present its response “over the next several months.” Chip makers claim Rambus, which attended meetings of a committee to set the industry standard for high-speed memory chips, plotted to obtain patents on the standard so it could improperly collect royalties.
