BERKELEY — You take a chance of getting a ticket when you double park.

When it’s a stolen vehicle parked in a busy shopping area, a ticket is the least of your worries.

That’s what police say happened Tuesday about 6:14 p.m. when a 40-year-old man was arrested after leaving a GMC Yukon reported stolen July 22 in Phoenix, Arizona double parked outside the Apple Store on Fourth Street to go inside to get an electronic device serviced

An officer on holiday patrol saw the man, identified as Keith Allen Wallace of Berkeley, double park the SUV and walk into the store.  The SUV only had paper plates and the officer had to use the vehicle identification number (VIN) to issue a citation, police said in a release..

When the officer checked  the VIN he learned it had been stolen.  He called other officers to the scene and according to a news released they “waited patiently” for Wallace to come out of the store and arrested him.

Police did not say if Wallace made any statements to officers when he was arrested.

He was charged Friday with vehicle theft and possession of stolen property, both felonies, according to court records.
