“Creed” director and Richmond resident Ryan Coogler will direct Marvel’s “Black Panther,” the studio announced Monday.
Chadwick Boseman will play the lead character, giving us a sneak preview in “Captain America: Civil Way” when it hits theaters in May. Set to hit theaters in February 2018, “Black Panther” will be the first time a Marvel film will focus on a black superhero.
So wait … “Shaft” wasn’t a Marvel film?
Anyway, 29-year-old Coogler, an Oakland native who also directed “Fruitvale Station,” has been vague over whether he’d take the job. I guess this means he’d better hurry up prepping a “Creed” sequel. “Creed” — which starred Michael B. Jordan and Sylvester Stallone — was mostly shut out of the Golden Globe nominations, though Stallone did win one for best supporting actor, which may throw him in the mix for an Oscar nomination. Those will be announced Thursday morning.
