CAPITOLA — Police asked clerks and business owners to closely examine $100 bills and other cash after counterfeit bills were passed at six Capitola businesses in October.
Fake $100 bills were found from Oct. 5 to Oct. 28 at shops on 41st Avenue and Clares Street, according to Capitola police. The businesses included RadioShack, Togo’s, Trader Joe’s, BevMo! and August Moon Sushi Cafe.
Capitola police have been working with the U.S. Secret Service and police from Stockton and San Leandro on the case.
Police advised anyone handling money to look for the president’s water mark on all bills made after 1996. On any bill $10 and greater, the large denomination number on the back of the bill will shift from green to copper to black when tilted from 90 to 45 degrees, authorities said.
U.S. currency made prior to 1990 should contain red and blue security fibers, and bills made after 1990 should contain a number on a security strip that matches the bill’s denomination.
