The Cleveland Browns on Saturday requested permission from the Raiders so that they can interview assistant coaches Al Saunders and John DeFilippo for their offensive coordinator vacancy.

The Browns have an opening at offensive coordinator because Kyle Shanahan asked out of his contract last week.

Saunders and DeFilippo are the latest candidates added to the Browns list, according to NFL Network.

Greg Roman, the 49ers offensive coordinator the past four seasons, is slated to meet with the Browns on Monday for their offensive coordinator opening.

DeFilippo has coached quarterbacks with the Raiders the past five seasons. He also was with the Raiders in the same capacity in 2007-08. Saunders has coached for more than 30 years in the NFL, including the past four with the Raiders.

Saunders’ experience extends to being an NFL head coach as far back as 1986. He also has been an offensive coordinator for several teams, including the Raiders in 2011.

The Browns’ request seems to be a formality, given the contracts of Saunders and DeFilippo, as well as the other Raiders assistant coaches, expire Tuesday.
