The Monta Vista High School baseball team stayed within range of division-leader Saratoga with an important 3-1 victory over Lynbrook on April 26.

Chris Anderson, the Matadors’ ace, came through with another stellar performance. The senior pitched a complete-game six-hitter, allowing only the one run with six strikeouts and one walk.

Monta Vista’s Josh Huang, Sathya Kumaraguru, Tommy Lindstrom and Jake Kokeny all had two hits in the victory, with Kumaraguru providing an RBI. With the victory, Monta Vista improved to 7-3 in Santa Clara Valley Athletic League El Camino Division action. Entering this week, the Matadors were one game behind Saratoga in the El Camino title race and Lynbrook was in fourth with a 5-5 record.

Lynbrook’s Johnson Ku was 3 for 3 in the April 26 game, and teammate Zack Bowyer hit a double and drove in the Vikings’ run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Vikings bounced back the next day with a 5-1 nonleague win over Del Mar. Johnnie Teng was tough on the mound, allowing only one run on five hits in seven innings of work.

Martin Thurman was 3 for 3 with a triple, a run scored and an RBI for Lynbrook. Bowyer also had three hits and a run scored and Ku added two hits and two RBI in the victory, as the Vikings improved to 11-8 overall.

On April 24, Ku pitched a complete-game four-hitter with four strikeouts and was also 2 for 3 at the plate with a run scored in a 4-1 Vikings win over Wilcox. Bowyer hit two doubles, scored a run and drove in a run in the victory.

Monta Vista fell 6-5 to The King’s Academy in a nonleague game on April 28 to enter this week with a 12-10 overall record. The Knights improved to 15-5-1 overall with the victory.

Earlier last week, The King’s Academy split games with Aragon in Peninsula Athletic League Ocean Division action, but remained on top of the division with an 8-1 record entering this week. The Knights edged visiting Aragon 6-5 in eight innings on April 24, but fell 5-4 to the host Dons two days later.

Softball

Fremont split two games with Palo Alto and lost another SCVAL El Camino Division game to Lynbrook before finishing last week with a 16-10 nonleague win over Castilleja on April 27.

The Firebirds opened last week with a 9-4 victory over host Palo Alto on April 23. Anne Hu was 2 for 3 with a run scored and two RBI for Fremont, and teammate Alyssa Guzman was 2 for 4 with an RBI in the win.

But three days later, visiting Palo Alto took a 2-0 first-inning lead on its way to a victory. Hu and teammate Kianna Lum were both 1 for 4 in the loss.

The Firbirds’ offense came alive against Castilleja, however. Kamille Luna-Herrera was 4 for 4, including a triple, with three runs scored and two RBI for Fremont. Lum was 3 for 4 with three runs scored and four RBI. Hu was 3 for 5 with two runs scored, and Mya Galindo and Kylie Johnson both drove in two runs in the victory, as Fremont entered this week with a 9-11 overall record and 6-3 El Camino mark.

Lynbrook improved to 3-4 in El Camino Division play with a 6-2 win over Fremont on April 24. Breann Divoll was 3 for 4, including two doubles, with a run scored. The Vikings, who broke open the game with three runs in the top of the seventh inning, had five players with two hits apiece – Evan Liu, Miako Kitajima, Ellie Kulakkaholikel, Michelle Chew and Amy Tse.

But the Vikings fell to division foe Saratoga 5-4 on April 26. Divoll was 2 for 4, including a triple, in the loss. Lynbrook entered this week with a 5-9 overall record and 3-5 El Camino Division mark.

Cupertino split its El Camino Division games last week and also produced a nonleague win over Del Mar to enter this week with a 4-4 El Camino mark and 6-14-1 overall record.

In the 15-5 win over Del Mar on April 23, Isabelle Gutierrez was 2 for 3 with two runs scored and four RBI for the Pioneers. Leina Pada, Dominique Armenta and Jocelyn Pino had two RBI apiece for Cupertino in the victory.

The next day, Cupertino fell 10-5 to division leader Los Altos. Pada, Gutierrez and Gabriela Bolanos each had doubles in the loss, and Gutierrez had two RBI.

In a 15-5 win over Gunn on April 26, Pino had a huge game at the plate with a home run, two doubles, three runs scored and three RBI. Teammate Elise Oswald was 2 for 4, including a triple, with two runs scored and four RBI. Bolanos, Alyssa Hoeke and Miranda Joyce each had two hits, and Gutierrez drove in three runs.

IIona Sullivan of The King’s Academy threw a five-inning no-hitter with 14 strikeouts and two walks in a 12-0 victory over Notre Dame-San Jose. Malaya Street slammed a home run for the Knights and was 2 for 2 with three runs scored and four RBI. Brigid O’Connor and Kenzie Yamakoshi were both 2 for 3, including one double apiece, and each also had an RBI. Savanna Brown also had two hits, and Elizabeth Chae drove in two runs for the Knights.

The King’s Academy also won its next two West Bay Athletic League Foothill Division games to enter this week with a 7-2 Foothill record and 13-5 overall mark.

On April 26, the Knights beat Harker 13-1. Sullivan threw a two-hitter with 16 strikeouts and one walk. She was also 4 for 4, including two triples, with a run scored and four RBI. Teammate Sarah French was 3 for 5, including a double, with three runs scored and two RBI. Street had two hits and three RBI, and Elise Wilkinson and Cassie Gomez both had two hits for The King’s Academy.

In an 18-0 win over Mercy on April 28, Sullivan and Iza Gomez-Falcon combined for a two-hitter. Sullivan was 2 for 2, including a triple, with three runs scored and two RBI. O’Connor had a double and three RBI. Besides Sullivan, Yamakoshi, Brown, Wilkinson and Gomez all had two hits in the victory.
