County Connection buses will become rolling drop-off spots for charitable food donations for two weeks, starting Monday.
All of the public transit buses on routes in Central Contra Costa County and the San Ramon Valley will be equipped with crates to accept food donations for the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano.
The most needed items are peanut butter and canned meats. All canned goods, beans, rice, pasta, cereal and fruit, or 100 percent fruit juice, is accepted.
Food bank operators ask that no glass containers be donated because of the risk of breaking.
“The slow economy has caused more people to be out of work and in need of help. We’re seeing a 30 percent jump in requests for food,” said Renee Baptiste of the Food Bank’s Concord facility.
The County Connection provides fixed-route bus service and disabled paratransit service to nearly 4.5 million passengers annually. For details on bus routes and schedules, call 925 676-7500 or go to www.cccta.org.
